MENDHAM TWP. – Doon Wintz, 49, of Dogwood Road, was recently awarded for his selfless service to his neighborhood during the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, but he said the real outstanding citizens did not receive plaques.
Wintz was given the Linda Brusco award by the Mendham Township First Aid Squad at the Brookside Fourth of July Parade for consistently checking on his elderly neighbors in the weeks after the storm, and aiding them with whatever they needed.
Wintz downplayed his actions, and said he acted as any good neighbor would.
Robin Johnston was captain of the first aid squad during Hurricane Sandy and now serves as the president. He said Wintz should not sell himself short.
“He pretty much created his own Neighborhood Watch,” said Johnston. “He is a very dedicated and very caring individual.”
Johnston said she first came into contact with Wintz the same way she had with many residents following Sandy; he found her number, called her and explained that elderly residents in his area needed help.
“He really became the centerpiece for keeping an eye on the elderly people in his area,” Johnston said.
